As your doula, my main role is one of advocate for the parents-to-be. I hope to never replace the father-to-be, but to support both parents. Labour can be along process, and there may be times when the father needs to rest so that he can be at his best when by his partner’s side. There may be times when a father needs reassurance or support, so that he in turn can support his partner.
Sometimes it can be tough on Dads to remember all that information that they may have learnt in childbirth classes in the heat of the moment, when they are finding it distressing to see their partner caught up in the demanding task of labour.
My ultimate aim is to be there in the background, providing emotional support and confidence so that a couple can birth their baby together. You can read more about why a father to be might want to book a doula here
